Zane Navratil Pickleball August 20th, 2024 Newsletter

August is PACKED with pickleball! I went to Kansas City followed by Bristol, TN. Next week I’m headed to Salt Lake City and the following week I’m headed to Las Vegas. Following that, I plan on multiple days of non-verbal time.

Kansas City was a mixed bag. Allyce and I won two matches before losing to Hunter and Parris and Travis and I won one match before falling to Callan and Pablo. A couple days later, I had the same partnerships in Tennessee. Allyce and I won a match before losing to Christian Alshon and Anna Bright in a close one and Travis and I fell to Collin Schick and Jack Sock. We were done early, so I had time to go for a fun hike!

With so much happening in Pickleball, I’m going to try and bring more timely news to my audience. Here’s my most recent post — Tour Wars 1 Year Later!

As always you can catch Thomas and me discussing our hot takes on the latest and greatest that’s happening on the PicklePod!

Recently I have been working on moving my eyes instead of my head. This may sound trivial, but try it for yourself.

When your head is bobbing or moving, your hand-eye coordination suffers, and hand-eye coordination is the most important skill when it comes to high level pickleball. I’ve definitely found that I have reduced my mishits by reducing head movement.

Next time you play, try your hardest to keep your head as still as possible and see (no pun intended) for yourself!

Be sure you tune in for a new Pros vs 5.0s, but next week I’ll be reviewing some of your pickleball games!

As always keep your feedback and comments coming and thanks for supporting my channel!

Check out my newest YouTube videos, and be sure to check back to see if it’s your video that I’m reviewing!

Blitzed – Drugs in the Third Reich – Norman Ohler

Zane’s Rating – 10/10

This one is completely unrelated to pickleball, but I found it incredibly fascinating. I enjoy learning about history, and this was one of the most fascinating history books I’ve ever read.

The Third Reich was addicted to drugs. Prior to the war, Germany was the world leader in pharmaceuticals. Companies like Merck and Bayer mass produced opiates, cocaine, and methamphetamine, all of which were relatively new and unstudied. Methamphetamine, in particular, was particularly popular among factory workers, which helped increase production of a country that was numerically outnumbered. In fact, Ohler suggests that the Blitzkrieg, or “lightning warfare” was only possible because of the methamphetamine that was given to frontline soldiers. Meth allowed for tanks to surge deep into Poland, France, and Russia before their drivers even needed to sleep.

Over the course of the war, Hitler himself became increasingly dependent on injections of a cocktail of drugs including opiates, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Ohler makes sure to note that this addiction was not the cause of Hitler’s racist theories as his hatred was well documented prior to his drug abuse. If drugs are not taken into account, our understanding of the Third Reich is fundamentally incomplete.

My friends at Pickleheads just launched a free, dynamic Round Robin Generator that integrates with DUPR and has some really cool features!
