Anna Leigh Waters is more dominant than Serena Williams ever was. She’s on a 79 match win streak in singles, a 36 match win streak in mixed doubles, and dropped just 22 points in 11 games this weekend in women’s doubles. Ben Johns and Gabe Tardio look untouchable as well, securing their 5th title in a row together without dropping a game. Parity hopes have turned into sheer dominance, especially with Anna Leigh and Anna Bright hitting their stride. Here’s a look at what went down at the PPA Virginia Beach Open.

Pre-Tournament Insights
Notable updates before the games began: Alix Truong may be switching from Joola to Sypik. Let me know if keeping track of paddle brand changes interests you! Another major update—Collin Johns is moving to Vietnam for three months, skipping PPA tournaments for the rest of the year, including Worlds in December, unless exceptions apply.
Tuesday’s Action
I faced Spartak Rahachou, infamous for his Spartan warrior style and incredible one-handed backhand. Our last match saw him defeat me, but this time, after a dramatic match-ending controversy, I secured the win 11-8, 12-10. Elsewhere, Eric Oncins took down Grayson Goldin, and #42 Tom Protzek upset #19 Pablo Tellez.
Wednesday Highlights
We had paddle issues due to certification grit tests. Several paddles failed, delaying the Jonathan Medina Alvarez vs. Federico Staksrud match. In women’s singles, Samantha Parker defeated Salome Devidze, and in mixed doubles, there were upsets and fierce three-setters, with Anna Leigh Waters nearly ending the Fu family name with a counterattack.
Thursday and Friday Unveilings
Sam Parker’s run continued, though not without controversy against Lea Jansen. Chris Haworth beat Federico Staksrud, proving himself a giant killer. In mixed doubles, CJ Klinger and Anna Bright had a noteworthy run. Paddle-smashing drama ensued with Hunter Johnson, and a sportsmanship shoutout goes to Connor Garnett for his fair play against Jack Sock.
Weekend Showdowns
Saturday in women’s singles saw Parris Todd injure her ankle against Anna Leigh Waters, who advanced swiftly. Men’s singles were intense with Christian Alshon and Chris Haworth securing hard-fought wins. Mixed doubles took a break due to weather, leading into Sunday’s epic matches. Ben and Anna Leigh dominated the Johnsons, cementing their streak since April.
Sunday’s Grand Finale
In men’s doubles, Ben and Gabe clinched the title after rain-induced delays, besting CJ and JW Johnson with a clean finish the next day. Despite early-season parity hopes, Ben and Gabe have distinguished themselves from the "Big 4" alongside Anna Leigh’s continued wins.
The Virginia Beach Open illustrated the reigning supremacy in pickleball, with Anna Leigh’s singles and doubles exploits, alongside Ben and Gabe’s teamwork. All eyes are now on upcoming tournaments as challengers seek to break these dominant streaks.
